Additionally, new construction has razed forests and mountain sides in order to install kit homes in previously wooded areas of established neighborhoods, without adding sidewalks. The formula they use obviously does not consider these facts. Areas should be rated on how easy it is to walk to key services such as groceries, public transit, even doctors offices and the like.

Being able to walk to the neighborhood pub is nice but not exactly weighted high on my personal list of priorities. Lots of sidewalks, crosswalks with electric signs, public transportation, etc. I can walk Downtown with no problem! They seem to be fixing that with the Clingman Greenway, though. Good deal. As someone who works with Pedestrian Plans, ADA issues, and complete streets, the attention Walkscore is getting is very frustrating.

I have done my best to discourage planners and transportation professionals from using it because it creates a false sense of what the environment is like for pedestrians. It does very well in downtown and old neighborhood environments. However, we already know that downtown Asheville is walkable.

Early Girl Eatery: Local farm-to-table all-day breakfast spot. You can be as healthy or unhealthy as you desire. They have great gluten-free options and outdoor seating out front.

Tupelo Honey : An all-day spot serving up breakfast and southern comfort food. This is the original location and the restaurant is now in over 10 states. The Blackbird weekend brunch only : a southern eatery with a fun weekend brunch.

Their omelets are always great and our son loves the french toast! The Rhu : Some of the best pastries and bread around. They also have breakfast and lunch sandwiches and delicious coffee drinks. Takeout dinner from Chai Pani.

We love the massaman curry and green curry , though everything we have tried has been great! Red Ginger Dimsum : A fun Chinese restaurant putting their own modern spin on classic Chinese dishes.

Red Ginger has its own vibe and I always feel like I am in a bigger city when there. The Shanghai-style pork dumplings are always a good pick! Wasabi : A local favorite for sushi and hibachi. Order online and pick up for a fun night in or grab a seat at the bar to watch the chefs work! They also have a fun patio out front that is great for people watching. Miyako House : Awesome sushi and other fresh Japanese staples.

Heiwa Shokudo : An off-the-beaten-path Japanese bistro serving ramen and sushi. The shiitake broth is great and they have a nice outdoor patio. Chai Pani : Amazing Indian food in a laid-back spot. Matchstick okra fries are always a crowd favorite. Downtown is full of coffee shops and all are great! In fact, you can find pretty much all of them on our best coffee in Asheville list.

Below are some of our favorites with some quick details to help you find the perfect one for you the next time you are in downtown Asheville. West Asheville is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the region, and it may be one of the most interesting with its many colorful murals adorning the buildings. The Montford neighborhood is slightly northwest of downtown Asheville, within walking distance of the city center. This historic district contains many houses built between and , and the streets are wide and shaded by large trees.

You can also easily walk or bike to restaurants, cafes, parks, and even grocery stores located on Merrimon Avenue a road adjacent to Montford from many homes in the neighborhood. Historic and varied, the Montford neighborhood is a favorite for walking, with eclectic, artful homes around every corner, many with beautiful gardens to admire as well. Similar to Montford, the Charlotte Street neighborhood is within walking distance from downtown Asheville and features historic homes on tree-covered streets.

You can walk from the Grove Park neighborhood to Charlotte Street and on to downtown, if you desire. Definitely take a walk near the holidays to see how many Grove Park homes deck the halls with sparkling lights.
